What is a wheelchair-accessible porta potty?

How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, say at least 5 percent of portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than one. For a cluster of 1 to 20 units, that means at least 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 to 40 needs at least 2.

Read the rule at the U.S. Access Board. Your venue, permit office or event organizer makes the final call on what is required for your event. We help you meet the count; we do not give legal advice.

Where should an accessible porta potty go?

An accessible porta potty should sit on firm, level ground with a smooth path from parking or seating. Gravel ruts, soft grass, curbs and slopes can stop a wheelchair before the door. Keep at least a 5-foot clear area in front of the door so a chair can turn and enter.

Concrete, packed gravel, a driveway or plywood over lawn all work. Mark the spot and tell the driver about curbs or steps on the route.

Can I swap a standard unit for an accessible one?

A standard unit can be swapped for a wheelchair-accessible unit when you book or up to the day before delivery, based on stock. Accessible units are limited, so book early for spring and fall weekends. Mixed orders share one delivery and one pickup.

Questions renters ask

Does a wheelchair-accessible porta potty meet ADA rules?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty is built for wheelchair users, but whether a full setup meets ADA rules depends on the site, path and counts too. Ask your venue or permit office what they require, and we will match the units to it.

Do I need an accessible porta potty for a private party?

A private backyard party usually has no legal requirement for an accessible unit. Book one anyway if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, or if older relatives are coming. It keeps everyone out of your house.

Can an accessible unit go on grass?

An accessible unit can go on grass if the ground is firm and level. After rain, Oklahoma clay gets soft, so plywood or a hard path helps a wheelchair reach the door. Avoid low spots that hold water.

Do accessible units cost more?

An accessible unit costs more than a standard unit because it is larger and fewer are available. The written quote lists each unit type separately, so you can see the difference before you book.
