What is a portable hand-washing station?
A portable hand-washing station is a freestanding unit with two sinks, foot pumps, a fresh-water tank, soap and paper towels. Two people can wash at the same time. The station needs no hose or power, so it can sit next to porta potties, food tables or a job-site break area.

How many hand-washing stations do I need?
Plan 1 hand-washing station for every 3 porta potties, and at least 1 wherever food is served. Construction sites must provide handwashing under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) when workers handle substances like paint, coatings or concrete. A 6-unit event usually gets 2 stations.
Read the federal handwashing rule at eCFR 29 CFR 1926.51. Food vendors should also check with the local health department.
Is a hand-washing station cheaper than flushing units?
Adding one hand-washing station to standard porta potties usually costs less than upgrading every unit to a flushing model with a sink. For weddings, many hosts use flushing units near guests and a station by the food. For crews, standard units plus a station is the common setup.
Can a hand-washing station be used in winter?
A hand-washing station can freeze on nights below 32°F because the tank holds fresh water. From December through February, plan stations only for daytime events, or use hand sanitizer dispensers in each unit instead. Job sites can switch back to stations when nights warm up.
Questions renters ask
Do hand-washing stations come with soap and towels?
Every hand-washing station arrives with soap, paper towels and a full fresh-water tank. Long-term stations are refilled and restocked at the weekly service. Ask for an extra mid-event refill for busy all-day events.
Where does the wastewater go?
Used water drains into a holding tank inside the station, not onto your lawn. The tank is emptied at service or pickup. Containment trays are available for job sites that require them.
Can I rent a hand-washing station without a porta potty?
A hand-washing station can be rented on its own for food booths, petting zoos, farm stands or a job-site break area. It ships on the same truck schedule as porta potties.
Is a hand-washing station required for food at my event?
Food handling usually requires handwashing, but the exact rule depends on the health department and event permit. Ask your county health department, and plan at least one station near food either way.
